ABSTRACT

A Psychology of Liberation perspective on sex-trafficking in women

The author discusses how Psychology of Liberation can contribute to the understanding and treatment of women with traumas caused by sex-trafficking. This is exemplified through prostituted Nigerian women in Norway who ostensibly belong to the international sex trade. Psychology of Liberation posits a psychology from the perspective of the marginalized. The urgent problems of the oppressed are met by a psychology originating at «root level». Hence political awareness forms an important part of psychological treatment both diagnostically and clinically. Psychology of Liberation coordinates clinical psychology, community psychology and culturally sensitive therapy, addressing problems in the intersection between political structures, power, violence and health. It originated in some of the same countries that export women into the international sex-industry today. The author argues that in a post-colonial world, psychology from the south can give valuable contributions to the global effort in combating trafficking in human beings.

I sine fysisk konfronterende filmer vektlegger regissøren David Cronenberg kroppens eksistensielle karakter.

THE FLESH ARTIST

The Canadian film director David Paul Cronenberg (b. 1943) is crowned as the inventor of body horror or venereal horror. He is a highly original and independent artist, called «the first Canadian auteur». His first films were very provocative, and established him as a cult figure in the horror audience. His images are fantastic and inspired by the inventiveness of film pioneers like Méliès and the Lumière brothers. Cronenberg’s films are philosophical investigations of themes like the borders of consciousness and the human body. He is a radical existentialist searching the essences of human life. This essay describes David Cronenberg’s life and artistic work with particular emphasis on his illustrations of the body. His films are embodiments of our common anxieties, constituting contemporary monstrosity, and as such represents a critique of our societies. Central figures in his movies are illness, anxiety of death and anxiety of our loss of control. This essay presents skepticism to Croneneberg’s statement that his films represent a critique of the Cartesian dualism of mind-body. They are absolutely dualistic, but turn the topic up-side-down: praising the body and reducing consciousness. The Cronenberg project is here described as an original further development of the aesthetics of melancholy.

ABSTRACT

English title: The prevalence of sexual abuse in a Norwegian representative population sample.

The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence of sexual abuse occurring before and after the age of sexual consent (16 years) in a representative Norwegian population sample. A random sample of 1450 men and women aged 18-80 years received a questionnaire about unwanted sexual experiences, which were categorized as unwanted sexual behaviours, unwanted sexual acts or unwanted intercourse. In total 703 people responded, giving a response rate of 48, 7%. The sample consisted of 387 women (55.3 %) and 316 men (44.9 %). Unwanted sexual behaviour before age 16 was reported by 24.3% of women and by 12.0 % of men, whereas 19.4 % of women and 7.6 % of men reported being 16 years or older the first time they had such experiences. Unwanted sexual acts before age 16 was reported by 18.3 % of women and 3.2 % of men, and by 9.0 % of women and 3.5 % of men above age 16. Unwanted intercourse occurring before the age of 16 was reported by 11.4 % of women and by 0.9 % of men, whereas 16.3 % of women and 1.6 % of men reported being 16 years or older the first time they had such experiences. The results show that unwanted sexual experiences were highly prevalent among these respondents, and more prevalent among women than men. Further, there was a relatively high prevalence of sexual abuse before the age of 16 years.

Sofi Oksanen – skammens politiske geografi

Abstract

Eating shame

The Finnish-Estonian author Sofi Oksanen (b. 1977) is one of the greatest names in younger Finnish literature. With her novel Purge (Puhdistus) (2008) she has received numerous prizes, and the book is translated to almost forty languages. Her first novel from 2003, Stalin’s cows (Stalinin lehmät), is impressive fiction about eating disorders. This essay discusses the psychological precision and richness of her portrait of these forms of psychic disorders. Four psychological figures are emphasized in this text. Firstly, as a second-generation immigrant in Finland Sofi Oksanen brilliantly describes socio-cultural confusion as a possible aetiological factor in eating disorders. The bodily-concretized psychopathology is linked to unclear conditions for development of female identity and a coherent self. Secondly, Oksanen describes the central role of the affect of shame in eating disorders. Different symptoms can be seen as efforts to deal with shame, but the results of eating disordered behaviour is most often more shame. Thirdly, the novel describes severe eating disorders as self disorders. Impaired mentalizing, i.e. the capacity to reflect upon others’ and own mental states, contributes to the bodily concretization of emotions. And fourthly, not only emotions, but also relationships are concretized in bodily ways. Stalin’s cows gives an idea of the role of insecure attachment in eating disorders, where the intimate relation with food can be seen as a compensation for close human relationships. The novel ends optimistically by challenging shame through the courage to openness and intimacy.

Abstract

THE PHENOMENAL BODY

Antony Gormley is one of our most challenging and successful contemporary artists. Since 1980 his sculptures have been based mainly on his own body. In his radical art he materializes his creative ideas about renewing artistic expressions, about outer and inner spaces, body and mind, and emotionally meeting oneself and others. Gormley’s art powerfully evokes strong emotions in the viewer, and stimulates reflection and self-examination, as well as the examination of self in relation to others, also called mentalization. This essay, which is partly based on a dialogue with Antony Gormley in his studio, presents his intentions to move away from art as representation, storytelling, drama and mimesis, towards an art based on affective exchanges. The essay also uses Gormley’s art and ideas as a stepping-stone to intellectually challenging the classical Cartesian division of mind and body. There is a particular emphasis on the body philosophy of the French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1907–61), who replaces Descartes’ famous «Cogito ergo sum» with the notion that identity and existence is based on bodily being in the world. Mind is embodied and body is minded.

Selviakttakelsen

Self-observations

In a series of six concomitant articles the genre of self-portraits is itself portrayed. The emphasis is on how the development of this artistic form communicates in rich and fascinating precise ways with cultural and societal contexts. The statement in this series of brief essays is that self-portraits function as portraits of contemporary conceptualisations of the psychological self.

ABSTRACT

E-therapy as a follow-up supplementto outpatient treatment of adolescents: a qualitative study of therapist experiences

Three therapists were interviewed about their exploratory use of e-therapy (asynchronous text-communication) subsequent to ordinary out-patient psychotherapy with three adolescents. Two therapists experienced their patients as more active, while one was less concealing, when compared to ordinary psychotherapeutic treatment. A feeling of reduced therapeutic control was reported. No major communication problems were reported, and legal, ethical and clinical aspects of e-therapy were perceived as satisfactory. Improvements in technical usability were suggested. The therapists emphasized that implementing e-therapy on a larger scale would require development of administrative and clinical procedures. The authors suggest that from a therapist's perspective, e-therapy combined with and as a follow-up to ordinary psychotherapy seems to induce less relational and communicative difficulties than e-therapy alone might do.

ABSTRACT

Sexual satisfaction in people with heart disease

This article examines the relationship between physical discomfort/ pain caused by heart disease and sexual satisfaction, symptoms of anxiety, depression, and degree of satisfaction in relationships. Data was obtained from 643 members of The Norwegian Association of Heart and Lung Patients (LHL) using anonymous and self- administered questionnaires. Participants were aged 18 to 84 years old. The response rate was 36 %. A total of 26 % of the sample reported having had sexual problems. Those having sexual problems reported lower sexual satisfaction than those without such problems. Sexual dissatisfaction was directly related to coital frequency, sexual problems, relationship satisfaction, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Degree of satisfaction in relationships, anxiety and depressive symptoms were more important predictors of sexual dissatisfaction than physical discomfort/pain caused by heart disease.
