Author guidelines

Manuscript submission and publication are free of charge.

Everything we publish is free of charge and made freely available at www.psykologtidsskriftet.no.

A manuscript should represent an original contribution to the field of psychology and present a clearly formulated research question. The research method applied should correspond meaningfully to the research question. The author(s) should apply empirical reasoning that enables the reader to follow the research process. Implications or potential implications for practice should, as far as possible, be mentioned in the abstract and discussion section. See Aims and Scope for a description of what types of work we will consider for publication.

We welcome a wide variety of manuscripts and are interested in contributions from all areas in which psychologists practice their profession (organisational psychology, social psychology, clinical health psychology, research practice, psychometrics, etc.).

Incomplete manuscripts will be automatically rejected.

Manuscripts must not exceed 28,000 characters (approx. 4,200 words), including spaces, abstracts, literature references and tables.

We allow theoretical and qualitative manuscripts up to 40,000 characters (approx. 6,000 words).

Brief reports must not exceed 15,000 characters (approx. 2,200 words), including spaces and references.

As of January 2024, all our content will be published with Open Access under Creative Commons (CC) license CC BY 4.0.

Furthermore, CC BY 4.0 means that others are free to copy, distribute and disseminate the article in any medium or format for any purpose, including commercial, without asking permission from the author or publisher, and without charge.

The conditions for free use of the content are to credit the authors and source and to link to the CC BY 4.0 license. Furthermore, users must clarify the license terms under which the work was published. If the user has made changes to the manuscript, these must be disclosed.

Submit your manuscript to ScholarOne Manuscripts.

Plagiarism

Journal of the Norwegian Psychological Association routinely screens all submitted manuscripts for possible plagiarism using iThenticate plagiarism detection software.

If misconduct is discovered in a submitted manuscript, the manuscript may be rejected.

If misconduct is discovered after publication, it may result in publication of a correction note or retraction of the manuscript.

Writing style

As a general rule, manuscripts should follow the IMRAD structure, except for case studies and theoretical articles, which may have a freer form.

Introduction: This section should describe the purpose of the study, a review of existing literature and a clearly formulated problem or description of the hypotheses to be explored.

Method: This section should provide a full account of the steps in the research process, of the tools used, and of the procedures followed. The account should be detailed enough to enable replication.

Results: In this section the data are analysed and the main findings reported.

Discussion: This section should contain a brief summary of the most important findings, the author’s interpretation of the findings, an analysis of methodological weaknesses, and an account of possible implications.

Note that scientific manuscripts can be structured in different ways. Still, some principles should always be followed.

Prior ethical approval from the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics (REK) or equivalent must be obtained for research involving (sensitive) health data. This approval must be specified and described in the methods section of the manuscript. Authors are obliged to protect the privacy of informants and to follow current guidelines for data sharing.

We encourage authors to use APA 7 reporting guidelines; see Journal Article Reporting Standards (JARS).

Journal of the Norwegian Psychological Association follows the principles described in APA 7. This includes the principles for ethical publishing practices, which means that we expect authors to:

  • cite other research in a correct and accurate manner

  • contribute to protecting the rights and dignity of informants

  • protect other author's rights to their intellectual property by following appropriate citation rules and ensuring that any necessary permission for reproduction is obtained

  • use inclusive language (see, for example, Inclusive Language Guidelines)
