Citation manipulation

Citation manipulation occurs when references are used in the publication of articles to artificially inflate the impact of an individual, research institute, journal or subject. Citation manipulation distorts the scholarly record, misleads readers, and undermines trust in research. Journal of the Norwegian Psychological Association is dedicated to counteracting citation manipulation, and follows the recommendations issued by Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE).

Authors who encounter pressure (from an editor, peer reviewer or co-author) to include citations are encouraged to be vigilant and to contact the editor-in-chief if a situation becomes difficult to handle.

The editorial staff of Journal of the Norwegian Psychological Association are continually on the lookout for signs of citation manipulation at the revision and proofreading stages as well as on submission.

As a rule, we request that DOIs be included in references.
